Virtual nursing models: A Strategist's guide

Posted By The Academy

January 19, 2024

Out of the pandemic’s rapid innovation came a new inpatient care delivery model: virtual nursing. In this model, a virtual nurse directly oversees or otherwise supports the care delivery of the bedside team—with the goals of improving nurse turnover, decreasing labor costs, and reducing length of stay. Yet despite virtual nursing’s potential, it’s still not clear what challenges this model is best poised to solve or how executives should position virtual nursing within system strategy.

In this session, experts from THMA's Nursing Catalyst will share an update for strategists on how virtual nursing programs are evolving and facilitate a discussion about their potential to address organizational challenges. We’ll use this time to:

  • Describe variations among virtual nursing pilots to date for implementing and resourcing virtual nursing

  • Discuss the potential for virtual nursing to achieve a meaningful shift in bedside staffing ratios

  • Explore how varying program goals may influence long-term financial viability as virtual nursing programs scale beyond the pilot stage
